Raza's journey into teaching

In school, Raza had been involved in local gangs. But one of his teachers spotted his potential and encouraged him to become the first in his family to go to university, and ultimately to a career in finance. He continued to see the effects of inequality long after he'd left school.

"There weren’t enough people from my background that were at my university, " he said. "When I went into finance, again there weren’t enough people from my background. I questioned myself – what role can I play that’s going to address that social injustice?"

Teaching was that role, he decided. He chose to train on the job through our Training Programme and has never looked back. Today he is a headteacher.

Make a career choice that matters

Rachel worked in cyber-security. She had what she describes as a ‘glamorous’ lifestyle, but she was looking for a career that would have more of an impact.

"When I handed my notice in, my boss thought I’d lost the plot – no one really understood why I was leaving to go into teaching," she said. "But that’s quite a nice feeling because you know you’re doing something that’s truly aligned to what makes you happy."
