Frequently asked questions
- Is there DfE scholarship funding available?
You may be able to get your NPQ course fees paid for by the Department for Education (DfE). This is called scholarship funding.
You do not need to apply for it. When you register for an NPQ, the DfE will tell you if you are eligible for funding.
Scholarship funding for autumn 2024 will target those teachers and leaders who work in the most challenging schools or educational settings, serving more disadvantaged communities.
Here are the changes in full:
- The DfE have capped the number of funded places, meaning there is a limited number available for this cohort.
- All state schools will be eligible for fully-funded places on the NPQ in Headship, NPQ for SENCOs, NPQ in Leading Primary Maths and Early Headship Coaching Offer only.
- For all other NPQs, schools with the highest 50% of pupil premium pupils will be eligible for fully funded places, as well as early years and 16 to 19 educational settings identified as having high disadvantage.
Funding for the April 2025 cohorts and beyond has not been confirmed.
For more information on funding, please visit the DfE website.
- What are the costs of the NPQs if I don’t qualify for scholarship funding? Are there any discounts available?
If your school isn’t eligible for DfE scholarship funding, either you or your school will need to fund your NPQ programme. You’ll find the cost of each NPQ below. There are no discounts available at this time.

If the NPQ programme you are wanting to complete is self-funded, you or your school are required to pay the full cost upfront at the start of the programme.
- How do I apply for DfE funding?
Your funding status is confirmed when you complete your DfE registration through GOV.UK. When you apply for an NPQ, the DfE make an automatic check to see if your school or programme is eligible for funding.
Simply register for the NPQ of your choice and then complete your application with your delivery partner.
Access to funding remains conditional on successful verification of your registration information against Teaching Regulation Agency records and DfE confirmation of school eligibility, so you must ensure that any further information supplied to your delivery partner matches your teacher record.
- Can I apply for funding if I want to do more than one NPQ?
You can do more than one NPQ, but will only be eligible for funding for each NPQ once.
If you withdraw or fail your course, you cannot get funded again for the same NPQ.
- Are there any discounts for Teach First ambassadors?
There is no additional discount available for Teach First ambassadors. See the DfE scholarship funding eligibility section for information on funding support available.
